I have suffered from cold sores since I was a child. As I get older (I’m 28 now) and the stresses of life intensify and my immune system deteriorates, the outbreaks are more frequent and nastier than ever. Sometimes now I even get 2 sores on different parts of my lip forming at the same time (not spreading, just appearing at the same time). I had been a slave to the horribly ineffective Abreva for YEARS.. and it just DOESN’T work. This product however DOES work, and is super inexpensive! As other reviews have stated, it does sometimes burn a bit at first depending on how far along the sore is.. but as soon as you apply it and it dries, it begins to “kill” the sore and seal it in. I love this aspect as it protects the sore from moisture with a film, with is often the cause of spreading and prolonged healing times. I noticed a sore forming under my nose, all of a sudden it was cherry red (the MOST painful place) yesterday afternoon. I applied some Lysine gel while I was at work, as it’s all I had in my purse at the time. I think this helped to slow the formation. When I arrived at home, I applied a layer of Zilactin. It sealed it immediately and before I went to bed (about 4 hours after application) the site wasn’t red at all, and appeared to be dried out completely. This is truly a miracle product for those who suffer with cold sores and are tired of paying money for the expensive stuff that simply does not work.
I will comment though that when you feel the “tingling” sensation and the sore hasn’t appeared yet.. this product may not be the best one to use at that time. Lysine gel seems to prevent the sore from forming without damaging the skin. If you happen to be without the Lysine gel, and the cold sore does form, then the Zilactin gel is the way to go to stop the sore in its tracks.

This is the best cold sore medicine and actually works better than Abreva and other famous brands. My coworker informed me about Zilactin over Abreva and when I tried it I couldn’t believe how quickly it helped. The cold sore did not get bigger and it dried out and flakes off. Make sure to use it upon any initial tingly sensation you get and your cold sore will not even form. It will dry out the area and flake off. This has saved me so much money and embarrassment. I’m so happy with Amazon as it is hard to find Zilactin now a days in stores.

I’ve been suffering from cold sores since I was very young. They’ve gotten worse over the years because initially I thought they were pimples so I’d pick at them. Thankfully I am on a stricter regiment when it comes to maintaining my health and keeping my immune system up so I don’t get them so much anymore, but when I do GOSH is it embarrassing! I have to be seen in public a lot so I am very self conscious about cold sores and am always trying to contain them. I’ve bought a lot of the highly rated products on Amazon and tested them out. I would say that this one is one of the best…
PROS: It goes on clear. It feels tingly, but a good tingly. It literally dries the CRAP out of the cold sore. Zilactin is cold sores’ worst enemy.
CONS: Don’t smile. It will crack the film. It looks like your lips are super chapped when this stuff dries. It also sometimes stays on your lips, very hard to get off and kinda hurts to peel off.
The reason I am giving it 4 out of 5 stars instead of 5 is only because it makes your lips look like they are peeling, I didn’t like that. I think this is a great product to use at night time though. It is not intrusive or annoying.

If used as directed this product will prevent the full break out of a sore on your lips. I found it maybe 15 years ago and new immediately this was it. I am 58 years old and have suffered and endured this ailment as far back as I can remember. It amazes me why this product is not stocked at any popular store in my area Savannah GA. I discovered it on a trip Florida. The tube last a long time and I continually looked at every store I went to. Once I found it for half price on clearance and bought five tubes that was before […] Now I am so thankful to find it here. This product works best on the lips and outside mouth. I don’t have sores inside my mouth.

I usually get colds sores maybe once every 2-3 years, so when I got one two weeks ago, I ran to the store and got the one from orajel, which works fine to dry out the sore and lessen the healing time, but didn’t do much for prevention. I came upon zilactin on amazon while looking for reviews on the orajel cold sore brand and decided to order one just in case I got another one. Well…. lo and behold, due to the hot summer weather and feel super stressed out lately, I woke up this morning with two sores forming on my upper lip… I had already felt the burning sensation the day before but thought my lips were just irritated from being super dry from using of Retin-A. Well… luckily, the zilactin had just arrived a couple days before. I quickly dabbed some on my lips and have done so every 2-3 hours. What was two large sores on my lip is now barely noticeable. In fact, I’m not even sure if they are there anymore because I can’t feel anymore bumps on them. Zilactin far exceeds any brand of cold sore medication I’ve used — at least this time, it’s helped prevent my cold sore from emerging. I will update in a couple days to see if these little suckers have completely been prevented from coming out.
Update: 8 days since first application. All blisters disappeared after one day of application and none of re-emerged! However, it made my lips very very dry, but that may be due to over-application (once per every hour), but I’d take dry lips over colds sores any day! Now using quantum super lysing+ cold stick along w/ lanolin for the dryness (which are both excellent products by the way).
