I have been taking this supplement for night sweats, associated with pre-menapausal symptoms. The recommended dosage is one capsule daily. I take it at night, because that’s when my symptoms are at their worst. After about 30 minutes upon taking it, I start experiencing night sweats again. It works better with other related supplements, like – ashwaghanda, mother’s wart, and my thyroid supplement. I’m also conscious of not taking it every night, because it’s been known to toxify the liver. That’s why it’s important to speak to a health care professional before taking it. Overall, it works for me – just in combination with other herbs.

UPDATE: After using black cohosh for a good 2 years or so, they stopped working for my hot flashes. 😭 I would not say it doesn’t work, rather, my hormones levels went so low so fast (as also proven by blood work I had done) I guess the cohosh just couldn’t keep up. They really served me well for quite a few years, tho, and if your menopause isn’t as severe as mine, these should work fine for you. I have moved on to maca and that seems to do a really good job for the most part, tho I do still get break through hot flashes every so often. I would suggest trying the black cohosh to see if it’s compatible for your body, and if not, try maca. Things change, bodies change, hormones change… so you need to be able to adapt to get relief. I would have gone crazy without this stuff for as long as I used it!
Original review:
My old black cohosh seemed to be allowing “break through hot flashes”… I looked on the label and they were 40 mg… these are 540 mg. I started taking these and they seem to be keeping the hot flashes down, like the lower version did in the beginning. Not sure if it’s because of hormones changing, maybe I’m more “in the throes” of menopause or something, the only thing I do know is that it’s HARDER to control the hot flashes now. As long as I remember to take these EVERY day I’m fine. If I accidentally forget for 2 or more days, the hot flashes are right back again. NOT FUN! So I developed a system to remember to take these as well as my vitamins every day using those little medicine cups that come with children’s medicine (cough and so forth). I put all the bottles in a place I have to go past every day (near the door to my bedroom, and I have to go past to get out of my room, lol) and keep a little medicine cup there. Every morning I fill up with my vitamins and supplements and so far the system is working for me. The only thing that screws me up is when I go away for the weekend…I still have to figure something out for that situation.
I keep 3 of those cups and they are labelled: TAKE WITH FOOD, TAKE ON EMPTY STOMACH, TAKE WITH OR WITHOUT FOOD. That way I know I am taking each one correctly during the day.
This stuff, combined with Dong Quai and Wild Yam, is apparently magical because as long as I remember them every single day, no hot flashes! And those hot flashes are hell!!! It feels like suddenly out of the blue someone just came along and put a hot oven around your head! It’s awful! And these started for me in the winter… I cannot even imagine how awful they are in summertime. I hope mine don’t last for years and years like the horror stories I’ve heard. (They say to look to your mom to see how it was for her because typically a lot of the symptoms will be similar to female family members that you are blood related to, ESPECIALLY your biological mother.)
Thank goodness for ancient wisdom that’s been handed down from generation to generation and that we know about the things that help with these awful menopause symptoms! So far I haven’t even had to *consider* hormone therapy at all, and I really don’t want to, it’s not worth the risk to me… I’m so grateful I found out about this stuff before ignorance put me in the doctor’s hands and I was taking potentially harmful and dangerous hormones from pHARMa companies.

I did not feel like it helped me with my menopausal symptoms. I took them for quite a while, stopped and started again but I really didn’t see a difference. Everyone is different though.
