I began a weight loss program in January – nothing radical – just gave up sodas, sugar and fried foods, exercise and dropped my calorie intake to 1,200-1,500 a day. I’m losing 1-3 pounds a week and have lost about 20 pounds since January 2011. I still have about 110 pounds to go though. My energy levels were erratic – high one day, gone the next as my body got used to the change in calories, caffeine and sugar. My mind was alternately foggy and cloudy or clear -related to my fibromyalgia and the adjustment to my new eating habits. Then Spirulina popped up in a Dr. Mercola newsletter I think – and so I tried it.
I’ve tried several supplements people suggested but this one SEEMS to help most with regulating my digestion and my energy. It’s not like taking a prescription drug and you won’t experience “an immediate spike in energy,” or even be able to tell definitively that it’s the spirulina!! but I’ve been keeping a detailed food journal and looking back I can see that the days I feel better, sleep better and have a little more energy or a better day are the days when I take this consistently throughout the day. Maybe it works, maybe it’s a placebo effect, but I’m happy with it. The capsules are easy to swallow, no taste. I’ve had no problem with them taking them with or without food – other than my bowel movements may sometimes have a greenish tint to them!! The recommended dose is two capsules three to four times daily, preferably with food. My first bottle lasted not quite two weeks. I’ve been taking it a month. Spirulina’s claim to fame seems to be in its protein, but each serving is less than 1 gram of protein. You do however get 760 mg of Spirulina – of which there is no USDA established value.
According to various sites on the web spirulina is an “almost complete protein that contains 18 of the 22 amino acids the body needs. It’s not supposed to replace or rival meat protein, but when compared to plant protein it’s impressive. It is also rich with several different types of essential fatty acid, and contains Vitamin B1, B2, B3, B6, B9, Vitamin C, Vitamin D, Vitamin A and Vitamin E. It is also a source of such minerals as potassium, calcium, chromium, copper, iron, magnesium, manganese, phosphorus, selenium (selenium benefits), sodium, and zinc.”
The big reason most people take Spirulina is for the weight loss benefits. It’s a pretty popular diet food because it’s all natural, has all the major vitamins, amino acids and nutrients and has a very high protein content (60-70% of its body weight is pure protein). It’s also carbohydrate and sugar-free. As a result, it acts as a potent appetite suppressant reducing body weight over time. You can’t just take this and expect to lose weight, but if you’re doing other stuff right, it’s supposed to help. We’ll see! I can’t say it suppresses my appetite, but the NOW Foods Green Tea Extract, 250 Capsules / 400mg sure does!

so I bought this to see if it will truly help my allergies. I am desperate as even the pricey meds are not cutting it and 20 years of shots did nothing. I was nervous buying on line, but the expiration date is 5 yrs out so that is fresher than I find in stores. I like that its in a capsule, I really dont want to taste something this green. I have not been on enough to say what it will do for my constant runny nose…. but, they are not showing any bad side effects (I have ulcers and some meds can cause me more trouble) so far I am just happy its not “old stock”, they came fast ( I also have a prime account so it was an add on free ship item for me)and they are easy to take. they are a larger sized pill but they go down really easy for me.
I will update if my allergies improve, and with fall upon us, this is a good test time.
here is an update- I am finding less runny nose, and we are now heading into my bad fall allergy season. normally I would be getting sicker right about now. so I have to think this does help allergies. it sure is not hurting.

This stuff has worked for me for 20 years. This brand seems to do as well as the others. I have felt that the Klamath Lake Blue Green Algae was better than some, but this does as well. It does not cure all my ills, but it makes everything feel better. I digest better, my head aches less, my back aches less, and other things too. However, I have recommended it to many friends and family members who have tried it, and none of them think it does anything. But if I quit taking it I know it within two or three days. I would give it 5 stars if it fixed me, but only four because it just helps.

This price is better than it is in our local store. The quality of this brand is one of the better to choose from. This is very helpful to me. I take it every morning.

I started taking the spirulina capsules a little over a month ago. A coworker was taking the spirulina powder and swears by it. I couldnt stomach the powder so the capsules do the trick. After starting I have noticed that I am FINALLY able to see definition in the muscles. I’ve been working out for over a year now and really trying to gain muscle mass. I ate a high protein diet but nothing was working until I started taking spirulina. The change is very significant! Another thing I have noticed is that I seem to heal faster too. One major thing for me which may or may not be related to the spirulina is that my eczema is almost completely gone!!! I have lived with it for all of my life and it can get bad at times, especially in the winter. Usually the really bad flareups require steriod creams which I do not want to use. I had a really bad flare up on the palm of my hand that nothing was helping to get rid of. I’ve suffered with it for over a year in that area. I noticed today that its almost completely gone and healed. I do know that some people take it as a weight loss aid as it curbs hunger but I have not found that to be the true for me. However I am not looking to lose weight, just maintain and build muscle which spirulina seems like its helping that. I am really glad I decided to try spirulina and it will continue to be apart of my daily regime.
