I have actually been giving this to my dog, at the recommendation of my vet. However, the principle of operation is the same in dogs and in people — your body does not absorb much of this compound; most of it goes to the kidneys and then bladder to be excreted (usually less than an hour after ingestion). While in the urinary tract, D-mannose binds to bacteria that might otherwise cause a UTI. (In case you didn’t know, D-mannose is abundant in cranberries and is likely the primary reason cranberry juice is so effective against UTIs.)
As background, my dog has inflammatory bowel disease. She is on prednisone to control this condition. Prednisone causes two problems related to UTIs, though — it suppresses the immune system, making it more difficult for the body to fight back against infection, and it causes one to drink a good deal more water than normal, which leads to dilute urine (concentrated urine is less likely to have significant bacterial presence). Last year, my dog started urinating blood. We did repeated rounds of testing at the vet, to the tune of probably a thousand dollars (ultrasounds, urine cultures, etc., over and over again). She had E. coli and an Enterococcus species in her urine so we put her on cefpodoxime, which she has been on nearly constantly for 4-5 months. (We would take her off and, invariably, she’d start having trouble again.)
Anyway, after the last round of antibiotics was prescribed, the vet suggested D-mannose. While there are cranberry supplements for dogs, most of them have flavors to make them more palatable and my dog can’t have that due to her inflammatory bowel disease. So, I ordered this one for humans. I am using the human dosage of 3 pills per day and she has been on this for about 40 days at this point. (My dog is an 84-pound Rottweiler, for reference. If you have a smaller dog, you may want to alter the amount.) Her last round of antibiotics ran out a week and a half ago and she is actually doing all right for the first time in a long time. (Normally she would have relapsed by now. Since this D-mannose is the only difference, I have to think it’s responsible for the improvement.)
This comes in fairly large capsules. They’re vegetarian if that’s of concern to you. Because most D-mannose is excreted unchanged via the urinary tract, this is not a time-release product and if you’d prefer to remove the powder from the capsules, it should still work.
Anyway, I’m very happy that my dog can go off her antibiotics now. This is much less expensive and better for her liver and kidneys! And I would totally use this myself if I ever get a UTI.

For some reason I began having UTI’s last July 2014 – I took cipro each time and it would knock it out but then 2 weeks later it was back; tried all the remedies but nothing worked except prescription meds and then only for those 2 weeks this went on until March 2015….I found this product and was skeptical to say the least….BUT I got to see it in action…I had a UTI got it cleared up with antibiotics again, then began taking this product; I went for 5-6 weeks had to go to the doctor for a sinus issue and joked that I should have a urinalysis since I was having withdrawals from going in every 2 weeks, we all got a good laugh but the doc agreed to see how I was, I could hear the technician say yep there is a UTI showing, my heart dropped, not again, but then the doctor said “no that isn’t a UTI but I don’t know what that is” so the doc came in and asked me if I had used a scented powder or anything before coming in I said no; she showed me the vial of the sediment that is left after the spin, and she said “I have never seen anything like this ever, this is sediment but it’s pink I have never seen sediment that was pink” I was surprised also, but she assured me I did not have a UTI. On my way home it dawned on me IT WAS THE D-MANNOSE THAT SHE WAS SEEING !!! it truly DID adhere to the bacteria and created a sediment that was being washed out of my urinary tract…..the pink I guess is because D-Mannose is the component of cranberry that works on UTI in it’s concentrated form, so the sediment was pink. So I can safely say I actually saw the crud that this product washes out of the urinary tract. I have not had a UTI since early March of 2015 and it’s now June 26, 2015 for someone having them every 3 weeks this is a miracle for me; my mom also has issues now and I get her a bottle too and she has not had any trouble either since taking it.
I do not take the prescribed amount as others have stated also – I like to err on the side of less is more…..
I take 2 in morning first thing – to catch anything throughout the day however there are some days I only take 1 in the morning
I take another 2 just before bed – to catch anything that resides over night
so far so good, I can take this on an empty stomach without any issues too which is great

I am on my third bottle of this product. I love it. I get frequent UTIs and because I have Interstitial Cystitis I cannot drink cranberry juice without extreme bladder pain. This product helps to eliminate your chance of getting a UTI by reducing the chance of bladder stick to your bladder wall. After reading some people’s reviews it seems some people think that it will “cure” a UTI. If you truly have an infection, you need antibiotics to treat it. It is extremely rare that a UTI will go away on its own without antibiotic treatment. I only say this because I have had many issues with UTIs. My Interstitial Cystitis developed after a UTI I had went untreated for a week and then took 5 different rounds of antibiotics to eliminate the UTI. I was then left with the painful symptoms of a UTI without a bacterial infection. Doctors do not know for sure what causes IC, however, if I could go back to the moment when I first felt the UTI coming on I would have immediately gone to the Emergency Room instead of waiting for a week to get in with my physician. I will say that since I have been taking this product (about 3 months now) I have not had an infection. I will continue to use this again and again.
